light and shadow, and sharing it with the world.
but to preserve the traces of events that have accumulated within them.
and where quiet questions may arise.
LUCE VISION is an art brand dedicated to transforming Japan's architectural heritage, natural beauty, and cultural legacy into contemporary interior art through the interplay of light and shadow, and sharing it with the world.
Architectural Heritage
Gunkanjima is more than a ruined island. It is one of the greatest symbols of Japan's modernization, where architecture, engineering, urban planning and industrial technology converged. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is presented through contemporary fine art by LUCE VISION.
Masakatsu Yamaguchi (Observer of Light and Shadow)
Born and raised in Nagasaki, he has lived in a land deeply connected to Mitsubishi.
Since 2009, he has photographed Gunkanjima. For more than fifteen years, he has continued to gaze at the island from across the sea.
He does not narrate the island. He records the light that falls upon it, and the shadows that descend.
He does not define prosperity, labor, or daily life.
He simply preserves the moments when light and shadow intersect.
His gaze is quiet, yet it unmistakably reveals the layered depths of time.
Gunkanjima
Hashima Island floats off the coast of Nagasaki Port.
Its silhouette, resembling a battleship, gave rise to the name “Gunkanjima” — Battleship Island.
From the Meiji through the Showa era,
it was a coal-mining island that supported Japan’s industrial revolution.
At its peak, it held one of the highest population densities in the world.
In 1974, the mine was closed, and the island was abandoned.
In 2015, it was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site “Sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution.”
Today, the island remains, quietly afloat upon the sea —
holding both its prosperity and its shadows.
